Motorcycle Won't Start? Common Causes and What to Check — King`s Bike | Motorbike Service | Motorcycle shop

Before you call for help, run through these common causes. Many are simple.

The obvious ones

Is the kill switch on run? Is the bike in neutral or the clutch pulled in? Is the side stand up? Many bikes will not start or will cut out with the side stand down in gear. Is there fuel in the tank?

Battery problems

A clicking sound, slow cranking or a dim dashboard usually means a weak or flat battery. Cold weather and bikes that sit unused make this more likely. A loose or corroded battery terminal can cause the same symptoms.

Fuel issues

Old fuel in a bike that has been stood for months, a blocked fuel filter or a failing fuel pump can stop the engine starting.

Spark and electrics

Worn spark plugs, a blown fuse, a faulty starter relay or a damaged wiring connector can all cause problems.

Security systems

Immobilisers and alarms can stop the bike starting if the key fob battery is weak.
