Brakes are the most important safety system on your motorcycle. Here are the warning signs our mechanics look for.
Squealing or grinding
A squeal can mean glazed or worn pads. Grinding usually means the pads are worn down to the backing plate and are damaging the disc. Stop riding and get it checked.
Spongy or soft lever
Air in the system or old brake fluid that has absorbed moisture can make the lever soft. Brake fluid should be changed at the interval in your service book, typically every two years.
Lever comes back to the bar
If the lever travels further than normal, it may be a fluid leak, worn pads or a master cylinder problem.
Pulsing or vibration
A pulsing feel through the lever often means a warped disc.
Bike pulls or drags
A sticking calliper piston can cause the brake to drag, wear pads unevenly and make the bike harder to push.
ABS warning light
Do not ignore it. Your normal braking may still work, but the anti-lock system may not.
