Motorcycles in the UK need an MOT from three years old and every year after that. Many failures come from simple faults you can spot at home. Here is what to check.
Lights and electrics
Lamps and reflectors are among the most common reasons bikes fail. Check the headlight on dipped and main beam, the tail light, brake light from both the front lever and rear pedal, all four indicators, the number plate light and the horn.
Tyres
Check tread depth and look for cuts, bulges and cracking on the sidewalls. Make sure the tyres are the right type and size for the bike.
Brakes
Pads should have plenty of material left, discs should not be badly scored, and levers should feel firm. Look for fluid leaks around the callipers and master cylinders.
Chain and sprockets
The chain should have the correct slack and the sprockets should not have hooked teeth.
Steering and suspension
Turn the bars lock to lock and feel for notchiness. Look for oil on the fork legs, which suggests leaking seals.
Exhaust and noise
A blowing exhaust or a loud aftermarket system can cause a failure.
Number plate and VIN
The plate must be legal, secure and readable.
