After a London winter, most bikes need a little attention before the riding season. Whether your motorcycle has been laid up in a garage or ridden through months of rain and road salt, a spring check-up makes sure it is safe and reliable.
Battery
Batteries lose charge over winter, especially on bikes that have not been ridden. If the engine cranks slowly or the dashboard flickers, charge the battery with a proper motorcycle charger or have it tested. A battery that will not hold charge should be replaced before it leaves you stranded.
Tyres
Check pressures with the tyres cold, then look closely at the tread and sidewalls. Tyres that have sat in one position for months can develop flat spots, and older tyres can crack even if there is plenty of tread left.
Brakes
Squeeze the levers and press the pedal. They should feel firm. Look at pad thickness and check the brake fluid colour in the reservoir; dark fluid usually means it is due for a change.
Chain and sprockets
Winter washes lubricant away and salt causes rust. Clean, lubricate and adjust the chain, and look for stiff links or hooked sprocket teeth.
Fluids and leaks
Check engine oil and coolant levels and look under the bike for any drips. Old fuel can cause poor running, so if the bike has been stood for months, fresh fuel helps.
Lights and controls
Test every bulb, the horn, indicators and brake light, and make sure the throttle snaps back and cables move freely.
