A well-maintained chain makes your bike smoother, more efficient and safer. Here is how to look after it.
Check the slack
With the bike on its side stand or as your manual describes, push the chain up and down midway between the sprockets. Compare the movement with the figure in your owner's manual. Too tight and it strains bearings; too loose and it can jump the sprocket.
Lubricate regularly
Clean the chain with a suitable cleaner, then apply motorcycle chain lube to the inside of the chain while turning the wheel. Do it every few hundred miles and after riding in the rain. Let it settle before you ride.
Adjust evenly
Adjustment involves loosening the rear axle and moving the adjusters equally on both sides so the wheel stays aligned. Then torque the axle correctly. If you are not confident, it only takes our mechanics a few minutes.
When to replace
Hooked sprocket teeth, tight spots, stiff links, rust, or needing frequent adjustment all point to a worn chain. Replace the chain and both sprockets together.
