Why Do My Motorbike Brakes Squeal? — Easy Bikes Motorcycles Shop

Squealing brakes are common, especially on scooters ridden in London traffic, but they should never be ignored.

Brake dust and dirt

Dust and road grime build up in the callipers and between pad and disc, causing squeal. Cleaning often helps.

Glazed pads

Lots of light braking can glaze the pad surface, making it hard and noisy.

Worn pads

Many pads squeal when they are nearly worn out. If the noise becomes a grinding sound, the pads have reached the metal backing and are damaging the disc.

Worn or warped discs

A disc with a lip or uneven surface can cause noise and a pulsing feel through the lever.

When to stop riding

Grinding, a lever that comes back to the bar, a spongy feel or the bike pulling to one side mean stop and get the brakes checked straight away.
