The CVT drive belt is one of the most common wear items on an automatic scooter, and one of the most common reasons scooters break down in London.
How the CVT works
The engine drives a pulley called the variator. Rollers inside it move outwards as revs rise, changing the gearing smoothly through a rubber drive belt to the rear pulley and clutch.
Warning signs
Slow pull-away from the lights, a lower top speed than usual, judder as you open the throttle, the engine revving without the scooter picking up speed, a whining or slapping noise, or a burning smell from the transmission side.
Why it matters
A belt that snaps leaves you stranded and can damage the variator and casing. Replacing it on time is much cheaper.
Rollers and clutch
Worn rollers and clutch shoes cause similar symptoms, so we inspect the whole drive system together.
How often
It depends on the model and how you ride. Delivery scooters wear belts much faster, so have it checked at every service.
