Not every puncture means a new tyre, but some do. Here is how we decide.
Usually repairable
A small puncture from a nail or screw in the central tread area, on a tyre in good condition that has not been ridden flat.
Must be replaced
Damage to the sidewall or shoulder, large cuts or tears, a tyre that has been ridden while flat, or a tyre that is already near the legal tread limit or cracked with age.
Why riding flat is dangerous
A flat tyre can come off the rim and makes the bike very hard to control. It also destroys the tyre's internal structure.
Temporary fixes
Puncture sprays and plugs can get you home slowly, but have the tyre properly inspected as soon as possible.
Check pressures weekly
Many punctures are slow leaks, so a weekly pressure check catches them early.
